THERMO-MECHANICAL TESTING OF CBCM COMPOSITE AS SHAPE MEMORY POLYMER COMPOSITE

Abdul Basit

Abstract

Shape memory polymers are being studied as smart structures which can transform their temporary shape into permanent shape. In this work an active composite named as controlled behaviour of composite material (CBCM) composite has been studied to use it as a shape memory composite. The three point bending tests have been performed for programming the shape memory cycle (SM cycle) and also for the recovery of the composite. The composites have been heated above its glass transition temperature (Tg+20°C), deformed, maintained this deformation while cooling it and then reheated to Tg+20°C for recovery. At the end the free condition recovery of CBCM composite has been studied and compared with the conventional symmetrical (SYMM) composite.
